If you like Tracey Emin’s sculpture… look at William Tucker.

If you like Tracey Emin’s sculpture… look at William Tucker.

There’s something in both of their work that feels immediate, not polished. You can see the decisions, the pressure, the movement of the hand.

That same raw, gestural approach to the figure.

William Tucker (b. 1935, Cairo) is a British-born sculptor (later based in the US) who emerged in the 1960s as part of a new generation redefining what sculpture could be. His early work was abstract and constructed but by the 1980s he turned towards the human figure and started creating gestural and tactile forms that feel almost pulled from the ground.

His sculptures aren’t about perfection. They’re about weight, presence and touch. You feel the artist’s hand and presence in them just as you do with Emin.

Have you come across the work of William Tucker before?
