Choose Your Weapon is a highly influential and collectible piece, representing the convergence of Keith Haring, the Godfather of Street Art, and Banksy, the world's most iconic street artist. Choose Your Weapon first appeared in 2010 on a pub wall in Bermondsey, South London and as with all of Banksy’s artworks is a commentary on British culture. The dog’s simple, graphic style is a direct nod to Haring’s iconic barking dog motif from the 1980s. Banksy appropriates this imagery to challenge perceptions of disaffected youth, suggesting they are often misunderstood and misrepresented.
Haring’s barking dog, rooted in Egyptian hieroglyphics and semiotics, was a recurring symbol in his work - from his subway posters to his celebrated "Icons" series. While the dog can represent control and authority, it has also embodied loyalty, protection, and even the artist’s alter ego. By incorporating this powerful symbol, Banksy connects past and present, using street art to provoke thought and challenge oppression.
