Interior Morning was created in 1971 as part of a series of four works exploring the same interior scene at different times of day. Using identical stencils with varied inks, Caulfield captures the subtle shift of light through a simple composition of a lampshade set before a window, here rendered in soft grey tones contrasted with a vivid yellow frame. Characteristic of his practice, the image distils everyday subject matter into flat colour and precise form, allowing light and atmosphere to take centre stage. This particular example is especially rare, as it retains its original wide margins with the printed instruction ‘Trim to edge of colour…’, a detail usually removed in standard impressions. Held in major public collections including the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum, "Interior Morning" stands as a refined and quietly striking example of Caulfield’s exploration of light, space and repetition.
