Brown Pot centres on a large earthenware jar set against a turquoise circle, with strong black shadows and sharp yellow highlights suggesting a directional light source. Typical of Caulfield’s work from the 1980s and early 1990s, the print focuses on a single, everyday object rendered in flat, saturated colour, where shadow and light become as important as the object itself. Rather than describing reality, Caulfield constructs an idea of light. The artist uses simplified forms and bold contrasts to create clarity and tension within the image. The strength of this composition led to its translation into a large-scale mosaic for a Rome metro station in 2001, reflecting the enduring impact of this motif within his wider practice.
