David Hockney’s Paper Pools series, created in 1978, captures his fascination with light, water and colour through an unusual and experimental medium. While staying with his friend Ken Tyler in upstate New York, Hockney swapped paint and canvas for dyed, hand-made paper pulp, pressing and shaping it to form vibrant, textured images. The works often depict swimming pools, sunlit terraces, and shimmering reflections, inspired by the late summer heat and his love of Californian light. Rich in colour and tactile in surface, the Paper Pools blend painting, sculpture and printmaking, embodying Hockney’s constant drive to reinvent how an image can be made.
