'High on Hope' belongs to Harland Miller’s celebrated body of work inspired by the instantly recognisable covers of Penguin paperbacks. Drawing on this familiar literary format, Miller brings together elements of Pop Art, abstraction and figuration, underscored by his enduring fascination with language and text. The resulting images are at once witty, acerbic and deeply nostalgic, with painterly surfaces that echo the worn, well-handled jackets of classic Penguin novels.
Continuing this series, Miller replaces original titles with his own invented phrases, sometimes absurdly funny, sometimes quietly melancholic, imbuing the works with both emotional resonance and cultural memory.
